DRIMON ensures exchange of knowledge and experience across borders within both natural and social sciences. The main instrument will be the comparison of lakes and their drainage basins, and water resources management challenges in Balkan and Norway. The lakes and catchment areas to be studied include:
- Lake Prespa, shared between Albania, Macedonia and Greece
- Lake Skadar, shared between Montenegro and Albania
- Lake Vansjø in Eastern Norway
Through a combination of existing data and new measurements, the nutrient and sediment loads to the lakes, as well as lake trophic status, are being assessed. Environmental goals for the lakes have been suggested, and advice will be provided on how to achieve these goals through an understanding of institutional structures across borders.
Since the DRIMON Partners are concerned that research results should be useful for water resources managers, several workshops have been held on the Balkan, where managers and researchers have met and discussed issues related to the challenges of water resources in Balkan. These workshops have been financed by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Research Council of Norway.
In September 2009, the DRIMON Partners also held a student's course in integrated water resources management (IWRM). The course was held over one week in Durres, Albania, with Ph.D. and M.Sc. students from the three DRIMON Countries.
